MINDFULNESS
Our minds tend to either be projecting forward-thinking about issues, problems, challenges that have yet to arise, or who we want to be in the future. Or ruminating on the past, developing anxiety about things we could have done, should have done, who we could have been.
Mindfulness is a personal experience where we practice being in the present moment without judgment and without doing or fixing anything. With our attention, we bring each moment into our awareness of the present moment, just like our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and environment. We are just observing what is in the particular moment we experience.
When our minds wander during a mindfulness practice, many people may think that they are doing something wrong or that mindfulness isn't for them. However, when we notice our wandering thoughts, that moment of awareness is precisely when we are truly engaged in mindful practice. This is the moment when we are training our mindfulness muscles. With repetition, we will gradually notice that the time it takes for our minds to wander and then redirect back to the present moment will decrease. Like any other skill or practice, some people may take more time to improve, while others may progress more quickly.
We are only in the present moment if we decide to have a self-directed focus.
